St. Matthews in the 18th century was an area claimed by the Shawnee and Iroquois Native tribes, traveling from New York and Pennsylvania they used the Ohio Valley area for seasonal hunting grounds. Settled, by European Americans in 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, St. Matthews gained its first permanent residents. In the 1800’s the Inner Bluegrass region was settled by immigrants from nearby Virginia. By 1840 this area was known as Gilman’s Point, but 10 years later it adopted the name St. Matthews after the establishment of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church. Today St. Matthews is a thriving community with diverse opportunities. They have two of Louisville largest malls, are host to Octoberfest, and they are home to Brown Park. St. Matthews has an electric night scene comparable to Bardstown Road in the Highlands and is the ideal place for a night out. From Molly Malones to Mark’s Feed Store, St. Matthews has a panel of Louisville local favorites. St. Matthews is also the host of some of Louisville’s largest music festivals. Taking place at the exposition center, Hometown Rising and Louder than Life, both three days, are a must for both locals and visitors from surrounding states. The architecture of the neighborhood features Cape Cod and Craftsman styles accompanied by a pedestrian friendly community. I can honestly not say enough good things about Martin Crane.
