In 1774 the land that would later become The Highlands was granted to Colonel William Stevenson, however, it was his son, Major William Preston who in 1814 would settle the land and construct the “Briar Patch” plantation. Prior to the Civil war, The Highlands was largely populated by German immigrants and was named New Hamburg by its residents. The land was inherited by the Stevenson daughter in the mid-1800s and suburb development began. The installation of a streetcar line in 1871 brought new business to the area, leading to the subdivision of larger sections of the land. Cherokee Park was added to the community in 1891. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, often called the “father of landscape architecture”, the park is 409 acres with a 2.4-mile scenic route and is very cyclist friendly as well as extremely popular among Highland residents. Where Fourth Street Live is the preferred nightlife scene for tourists, you can find the locals at the art galleries, vintage shops and pubs that line Bardstown Road, which is known locally as “Restaurant Row”. The Highlands has been the place to be in the Louisville area since its completed development in the 1930’s. Bellarmine University, established in 1950, stands proud on the hills of Newburg Road almost as a mascot for The Highlands. The Universities community involvement and commitment is evident in its relationship with the surrounding neighborhood. The Highlands is known to be one of the most welcoming communities in the city and is host to several of Louisville's annual events. You can find the entire city lining the streets of Bardstown Road in March for the St. Patrick’s Day parade or the Louisville Pride Parade. The architecture of The Highlands is diverse as it is famous. Consisting of Prairie-Style, Camel Back, French Colonial and wood framed Victorian style homes, to name a few, this neighborhood is bound to have the ideal home for almost anyone.

I can honestly not say enough good things about Martin Crane.
